South Palm Canyon Drive

The gallery, shopping and restaurant scene along S Palm Canyon Drive, which runs one-way, north-south between Amado Road and Ramon Road in Palm Springs, saw a dramatic turnaround in the 1990s. Shopping developments now include Desert Fashion Plaza, anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue, and upscale Vineyard (corner of Baristo Road and Palm Springs Promenade). This is the place to be on Thursday nights, when Palm Canyon Drive closes to car traffic and vendors set up booths for a huge open-air market called Villagefest (between Amado and Baristo Streets; 760/320-3781). A certified farmers market offers fresh produce and armloads of flowers; merchandise ranges from jewelry to local musicians' CDs to objets d'art. The magic words "outlet shopping" draw label-conscious consumers from all over the world to the Desert Hills Premium Outlets (48-400 Seminole Dr, Cabazon; 909/849-5018), just a 15-minute drive west of Palm Springs in Cabazon. This Spanish-style complex is home to about 120 stores, most of them featuring famous brand names or prominent designers. The amount of savings can vary widely from one store to the next, and savvy shoppers will notice that many of the fashions are a season or so behind. Still, this is a fun place to browse or buy, especially if you know your labels and retail prices. Some of our favorite stores: the Movado watch outlet, Ermenegildo Zegna (men's clothing from a top Italian designer); the Gap Outlet (who can tell this season's jeans from last?); and Villeroy and Boch china. El Paseo, Palm Desert

El Paseo is the desert equivalent of Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive. This street boasts almost 100 boutiques, gift and antique shops, and galleries, as well as a number of worthwhile restaurants. Simply walking up one side and down the other gives you about a mile of nonstop window-shopping and browsing. (The people-watching isn't half bad, either.) While you're wandering, be sure to check out the Gardens on El Paseo (73-585 El Paseo at Larkspur). The entrance to this aptly named, two-level mall boasts a gorgeous desert garden accented with paths, sculpture, fountains, and native plants. Beyond the garden area a Saks Fifth Avenue awaits, along with lots of exclusive shops and trendy restaurants. Specializing in glass and sculpture, the gallery includes a library and adjacent sculpture garden.
