  "Getting there is half the fun" when one takes the long, easy-curve drive up to new Desert Willow Golf Resort, a plateau area with a 36-hole municipal golf course, clubhouse and restaurant , the entire journey looking out on postcard-perfect man-made and natural desert scenery. And to add to the good news, Desert Willow, open to the public, serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week. holes, the glass-blue lake and distant mountains.
• Centerpieces of miniature desert flora, and even amusing but utile bread baskets of twisted wire, containers were chosen after examination of 20 other bread-baskets varieties, said energetic dining room manager, Scott Bevan, proud of everything offered here, from the refreshingly breezy views to the kitchen expertise and top-level presentations of executive chef Mark Jannetty, whose background includes the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, N.Y.
• BREAKFAST: Served from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. daily, 'til 10 on Saturday and Sunday, with eight choices, some standard, some with Chef Jennatty's interesting personal touches, such as the excellent grill potato-corn hash. These picks among others: Morning melon and berry martini, generous portion of fresh fruits in an outsized, stemmed martini glass, $4.95; warm crepes with caramelized peaches, $6.95; stack of pancakes, $5.95, with banana-walnut topping or plain, both served with warm maple syrup, two eggs any style, on a grilled olive crostini, with choice of bacon or sausage, toast, grilled potato-corn hash; breakfast burrito, filled with scrambled eggs, queso fresco, grilled peppers, onions and cilantro, plus fire-roasted salsa and that great hash.
• LUNCH: Daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4 with an exciting menu of nearly two dozen choices, such as thick, flavorful corn chowder, cilantro oil, a couple of grilled shrimp hooked on the side of the bowl, $4.50; Pacific prawn martini, $7.50, a lunch in itself with the excellent table bread, prawns, whole and cut-up, steeped in a tomato broth with lime/cilantro marinade; several salads with our favorite, autumn salad, $5.95, with select greens, light dressing, pear slices, gorgonzola cheese and candied walnuts.
• Deluxe sandwiches, served with huge, crispy steak fries: The Cuban, $8.75, with Cuban shredded pork, layered with papaya mustard salsa, Bermuda onion; the border burger, half pound, $9.95, with jack cheese, Ortega chile, bacon and avocado on a chile cheese bun, so much more.
• Full, generous entrees such as free range rosemary chicken, $12.50; grilled Kansas City sirloin of beef with tobacco onion rings, $15.95; salmon roasted on a cedar plank, $13.95, and that's just the beginning.
• Dress code: There is a dress code here, same as for the golf course. No jeans, cut-offs, tank tops or shirts without collars.

They don't call Palm Springs the "golf course capital of the world" for nothing. Not only are there more than 100 Palm Springs golf courses in the valley area, but they are also among the world's most beautiful. In fact, if you watch golf tournaments on television, you've already seen many of them. They star in the highly-rated network golf special. Tennis is the sport that originally built Palm Springs golf. Movie stars Charlie Farrell and Ralph Bellamy began their famed golf Racquet Club in Palm Springs to attract their Hollywood golf friends. Be warned, however, the gorgeous mountains in the background may play havoc with your concentration.
